How to Register a Used or New Motorcycle, Key Steps in the Registration Process

Registering a motorcycle in Poland, whether new or used, may seem like a complicated process, but with the right knowledge, it can be done smoothly and hassle-free. Here are the key steps to take when registering:
Registering a new motorcycle:
1. Purchase and obtain documents:
- After buying a new motorcycle from a dealer, you will receive a purchase invoice and a certificate of conformity (homologation). Make sure the documents are complete.
2. Third-party liability insurance (OC):
- Before registration, you must purchase mandatory third-party liability insurance. You can do this online or at an insurance office.
3. Submit an application for registration:
- Visit the relevant Department of Motor Vehicles for your place of residence. Fill out the vehicle registration application form. You will need: ID card, purchase invoice, certificate of conformity, proof of third-party liability insurance.
4. Fees:
- Pay the necessary registration-related fees, including for the issuance of registration certificate, license plates, and inspection sticker.
5. Document Pickup:
- After processing the application, you will receive a temporary registration certificate. The final registration certificate is usually available for pickup after a few weeks.
Registering a used motorcycle:
1. Purchase and check documents:
- When purchasing a used motorcycle from the previous owner, make sure you receive a complete set of documents: registration certificate, vehicle card (if issued), third-party liability insurance policy, and bill of sale agreement.
2. Technical inspection:
- If the technical inspection is nearing its expiry date, visit a vehicle inspection station to renew it. Registration of the motorcycle will not be possible without a valid technical inspection.
3. Third-party liability insurance (OC):
- Similar to a new motorcycle, you must have current third-party liability insurance in your name.
4. Submit an application for transfer of ownership:
- Visit the Department of Motor Vehicles with the filled-out application for vehicle transfer. Prepare all documents from the previous owner as well as your identification.
5. Fees:
- Pay the transfer of ownership fees, which include obtaining a new registration certificate and potentially new license plates if changing registration districts.
6. Document Pickup:
- Collect the temporary registration certificate and wait for the permanent document.
